CLASS DESCRIPTION
In an increasingly complex mental health landscape, a nuanced understanding of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is paramount for effective client care. This comprehensive workshop is designed specifically for therapists and mental health professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge of ADHD, its pervasive impact on individuals seeking therapy, and best practices for intervention.
We will begin by tracing the fascinating and often controversial historical context of ADHD, exploring how its conceptualization has evolved over time and the enduring influence of these historical narratives on current diagnostic practices. Participants will gain a critical perspective on the journey of ADHD from early observations to its modern understanding.
A significant portion of our time will be dedicated to a thorough examination of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD as outlined in the DSM-5. We will not only delineate the specific criteria but also engage in a thoughtful discussion of their inherent limitations and potential challenges in clinical application. This will include an exploration of how ADHD can present differently across age groups and genders, and the critical importance of differential diagnosis.
Moving beyond diagnostic labels, this workshop will delve into the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD. We will compare and contrast the intricate brain functioning and structural differences observed in individuals with ADHD versus neurotypical brains. This segment will illuminate the biological basis of common ADHD symptoms, fostering a deeper empathy and understanding for your clients' experiences.
Effective diagnosis is a cornerstone of appropriate treatment. Therefore, we will identify and critically evaluate a range of assessments commonly utilized in the diagnosis of ADHD, equipping participants with the knowledge to navigate referral processes and interpret assessment results with greater confidence.
Recognizing that a holistic approach to ADHD care often involves multiple modalities, this workshop will also address the role of medication as a potential component of treatment. We will emphasize the importance of collaborative care with medical professionals, including psychiatrists and primary care physicians, to ensure comprehensive and well-coordinated client support. Finally, and perhaps most crucially, this workshop will empower you with effective, evidence-based strategies to employ when working with ADHD clients. We will cover a range of therapeutic interventions tailored to address core ADHD challenges, including executive function deficits, emotional dysregulation, and relationship difficulties. Practical techniques and real-world case examples will be shared to facilitate immediate application in your practice.
