Our primary objective for this course is to identify and understand how a Narcissistic individual operates in parental relationships, and particularly how they operate in family relationships. We will also explore the various wounds experienced by children of Narcissists and outline treatment for recovery from Parental Narcissistic Abuse.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
In Part 3 of our Narcissistic Abuse series, we turn our attention to the complex and often deeply painful experience of growing up with a narcissistic parent. This course focuses on how narcissistic traits and behaviors show up within family systems, particularly in parent-child dynamics, and how these patterns shape identity, emotional development, and relational functioning across the lifespan.
Our primary objective is to help clinicians identify and understand how narcissistic individuals operate within the context of family life. Narcissistic parents often distort family roles, manipulate relational structures, and condition their children to meet emotional needs that should never fall on a child’s shoulders. These dynamics can be subtle, yet their long-term effects are profound. In this training, we explore how narcissism influences parenting behaviors, enmeshment, favoritism, scapegoating, and control, and how these dynamics play out in the larger family system.
Participants will also examine the specific wounds experienced by children of narcissistic parents—such as chronic self-blame, identity confusion, emotional invalidation, and relational trauma. We will identify the various roles these children are often forced into—such as the golden child, the scapegoat, the lost child—and how each role carries its own unique psychological burden.
The course will provide a framework for treating individuals recovering from parental narcissistic abuse. This includes key components of the healing process: psychoeducation about narcissism, identity recovery, reality validation, boundaries and limit-setting, and the value of reprocessing therapies such as EMDR, somatic work, or parts work. Recovery from parental narcissism requires not only insight but also deep, compassionate repair of the internal world, and this course will give clinicians the tools to guide that process.
We will also explore a lesser-discussed topic: the risk that children of narcissistic parents may develop narcissistic traits themselves as a survival strategy. This section will focus on reducing risk factors and supporting healthy emotional development in children and teens who have been exposed to narcissistic parenting but are still forming their identities.
Whether your clients are just beginning to recognize the patterns in their families, or they are in the middle of a complex healing process, this course will help clinicians more effectively support survivors of parental narcissistic abuse with clarity, nuance, and trauma-informed care.

Part 1 focuses on understanding Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), and identifying the various types of presentations as well as give a brief overview of treatment options and prognosis. We will explore both observable symptoms as well as internal motivations and experiences for someone with NPD. The purpose of this overview of NPD is to both help therapists better identify NPD in their clients, but also to be able to identify if their client is experiencing a relationship with someone who has NPD. It is essential for victims of Narcissistic Abuse to understand NPD themselves, as they learn to navigate their healing journey with or without the Narcissist still in their lives. LEARN MORE
