When OCD and PTSD overlap, treatment requires more than protocol—it requires precision, flexibility, and trauma-informed care. This course equips clinicians with practical tools to assess and address the dynamic interplay between these diagnoses. Participants will learn how to modify ERP for trauma histories, integrate and implement trauma informed theory with ERP, and apply current research to guide complex case decision-making.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
When Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) co-occur, treatment becomes exponentially more complex. Standard ERP protocols often miss the mark, leaving clinicians uncertain about how to move forward—and clients stuck in distress. This continuing education training is designed to bridge that gap, offering a research-informed, trauma-responsive framework for addressing these dual diagnoses in tandem.
Emerging evidence from large-scale studies (2024–2025) highlights the clinical impact of comorbidity: individuals with OCD and PTSD require nearly 11 additional treatment days and often show poorer response on specific symptom dimensions when ERP is delivered without adaptation. However, when both conditions are treated concurrently, outcomes shift dramatically. One recent study found that 62.5% of clients experienced meaningful OCD improvement and 87.5% saw significant PTSD gains with integrated treatment.
This course offers practical, step-by-step strategies for delivering concurrent ERP and trauma therapy, grounded in the latest data from over 3,000 patients in intensive treatment settings. Participants will learn to assess comorbidity with nuance, adapt ERP protocols using trauma-informed principles, and implement ERP + Prolonged Exposure principals in a structured, clinically sound format. These PE principals can be modified with EMDR and other trauma protocols to assist in process.
Whether you're navigating stuck points in treatment-resistant presentations or seeking clarity on how to ethically and effectively sequence interventions, this course delivers actionable tools you can bring directly into the therapy room. You’ll leave with sharpened clinical skills, enhanced confidence, and a framework for working at the intersection of OCD and trauma—where so many clients need us most.

CLASS OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
-
Describe how PTSD impacts OCD symptoms and treatment progression, drawing from current empirical research to understand symptom severity, chronicity, and treatment responsiveness.
-
Use clinical tools designed to assess the nuanced interaction between OCD and PTSD symptoms across time and treatment.
-
Design a trauma-informed ERP hierarchy that thoughtfully integrates trauma informed strategies and safeguards against dissociation, ensuring emotional regulation and client safety throughout the exposure process.
-
Implement a concurrent ERP + Prolonged Exposure (PE) principals which can be facilitated with EMDR and other trauma processes, with the ability to justify this integrative approach using outcome data from recent large-scale clinical studies.
-
Identify and adapt to common clinical challenges—such as distress tolerance issues with unacceptable-thought spikes or rigid symmetry compulsions—using evidence-based modifications rooted in trauma-informed care and inhibitory learning principles.

DIFFERENTIATING OCD AND ANXIETY DISORDERS (PART 1)
Statistics reveal that individuals with OCD often face a lengthy journey of 14-16 years before receiving effective treatment, highlighting the critical importance of an accurate diagnosis as the initial step toward changing these figures. In this presentation, we will compare OCD with GAD, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, Illness Anxiety Disorder, and Somatic Symptom Disorder. It’s essential to understand the DSM-5 criteria for OCD to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment. Let's begin by diving into this exploration of diagnosing. LEARN MORE
