How to Treat OCD?

The series begins again!
The 14-16 year delay in accurately treating OCD is unacceptable, and precise diagnosis is the first step in OCD treatment. We will compare OCD with GAD, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, Illness Anxiety Disorder, and Somatic Symptom Disorder. It’s essential to understand the DSM-5 criteria for OCD to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment. Let's begin by diving into this exploration of diagnosing.
In today's fast-paced world, it is unacceptable that it takes clients 14-16 years to receive the correct treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This class aims to change that by equipping clinicians with the skills needed to accurately diagnose OCD and differentiate it from other mental health conditions, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Phobias, Illness Anxiety Disorder, and Somatic Symptom Disorder.
Misdiagnosis of OCD can lead to ineffective treatment and prolonged suffering for clients. Understanding the unique characteristics of OCD is crucial in providing the right care. This CEU class will guide you through the nuances of various mental health disorders, helping you to make accurate diagnoses.
What You Will Learn
Distinguishing OCD from GAD
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Characterized by specific, intrusive, and often unrealistic thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) aimed at reducing distress from these obsessions.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Typically involves pervasive and uncontrollable worry about multiple real-life concerns
Differentiating Specific Phobias and Social Phobia and OCD
Specific Phobia: Intense fear of a particular object or situation (e.g., spiders, heights).
Social Phobia: Focuses on fear in social situations, including fear of judgment or embarrassment, which can involve compulsive avoidance and ritualistic behaviors similar to OCD.
Differentiating Illness Anxiety Disorder and Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) and OCD
Illness Anxiety Disorder: Preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness despite few or no symptoms.
Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD): Excessive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to somatic symptoms that disrupt daily life, ranging from mild to severe.
Both of these disorders typically safety behaviors (compulsions) that they engage in.
Brief Overview of Other Disorders to Differentiate with OCD: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Schizophrenia, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa, Tourette’s Disorder, Kleptomania and Pyromania
5. Differentiating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and OCD.
Finally, we will address multicultural considerations, as serving a diverse population is one of our goals at KDH.
