WHAT IS AN ERP THERAPY CEU?
An ERP Therapy CEU is specialized continuing education focused on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard behavioral treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
An OCD Treatment CEU equips clinicians with the structured skills necessary to implement ERP safely, ethically, and effectively in clinical practice.
This course provides practical, evidence-based training in ERP while integrating current behavioral science models and multicultural considerations.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a neurobiological and behavioral condition characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Without proper treatment, clients may remain trapped in cycles of avoidance and ritualization.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) directly interrupts this cycle.
In this ERP Therapy CEU, participants will learn how to:
-
Develop strategic exposure hierarchies
-
Reduce compulsive behaviors through response prevention
-
Support clients in building tolerance for uncertainty
-
Implement treatment safely within scope of practice
The training also integrates the Inhibitory Learning Model (ILM), helping clinicians understand how new learning replaces fear-based associations rather than merely reducing anxiety.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Participants will understand Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
Participants will understand the Inhibitory Learning Model ILM as it applies to ERP.
Participants will recognize safety issues when using ERP.
Participants will understand how to use ERP with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Phobias, Illness Anxiety Disorder, Somatic Symptom Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Participants will briefly explore diversity: BIPOC, neurodivergence, and LGBTia considerations related to ERP.
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS BEYOND OCD
While ERP is the gold standard for OCD treatment, it also has evidence-based applications across anxiety-related conditions.
Participants will examine ERP use in:
-
Phobias
-
Panic Disorder
-
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
-
Illness Anxiety Disorder
-
Somatic Symptom Disorder
We will also address:
-
Safety considerations in ERP implementation
-
Managing client avoidance and treatment-interfering behaviors
-
Ethical application and informed consent
-
Cultural and diversity considerations, including BIPOC, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ populations

DIFFERENTIATING OCD AND ANXIETY DISORDERS
Statistics reveal that individuals with OCD often face a lengthy journey of 14-16 years before receiving effective treatment, highlighting the critical importance of an accurate diagnosis as the initial step toward changing these figures. In this presentation, we will compare OCD with GAD, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, Illness Anxiety Disorder, and Somatic Symptom Disorder. It’s essential to understand the DSM-5 criteria for OCD to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment. Let's begin by diving into this exploration of diagnosing. LEARN MORE

Leaning into Exposure and Response Prevention
K.D. Holmes, MS, LPC, and Monet David, MS, LPC delve into the transformative world of ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), widely recognized as the gold-standard treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). In this insightful discussion, you will uncover the essence of ERP as a powerful therapeutic approach, explore its foundational principles, and understand how it stands apart from other therapy methods. Learn about the pivotal role therapists play in guiding patients through ERP, and gain a deeper appreciation for its effectiveness in fostering lasting change. Whether you're new to ERP or seeking to deepen your understanding, this exploration promises to be both enlightening and empowering.
Leaning into Exposure and Response Prevention Part 2
In this insightful video, Monet David, LPC, interviews KD Holmes, LPC, about her blog “Riding the Waves of ERP: When Therapy is the Storm”, exploring how therapists can build confidence in delivering Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) through consultation, continuing education, and community support. KD discusses the emotional challenges therapists face when guiding clients through ERP’s discomfort-driven process, likening it to navigating a storm rather than calming the waters. Through examples and research, she illustrates how therapist confidence—nurtured through peer consultation groups, structured supervision, and live continuing education—directly impacts client outcomes, fostering greater distress tolerance and resilience. The conversation highlights how cultivating therapist self-efficacy transforms not only ERP practice but also the therapeutic relationship itself, ultimately empowering clients to ride their own waves of anxiety toward lasting recovery.
FEEDBACK FROM FORMER STUDENTS
Thank you so much for this presentation Keisha! I really appreciate your work and your help in consultation. The intimacy of the workshop was really helpful, I felt comfortable asking questions and sharing my experience with ERP. The role play and case conceptualization part of the presentation was really effective - it just helped everything to gel and really to process challenges. I appreciate the resources too especially the community based resources for our clients. I have lots of takeaways from the pres that I can't wait to delve further into. Thanks so much!
This class was an excellent introduction to diagnosing and treating OCD. Highly recommended for all therapists (even if the intention is not to begin treating OCD), but to just to be able to more accurately diagnose their clients and differentiate other anxiety presentations from OCD. The presenter is also very engaging, and teaches the information in a very relatable and easy to understand way!
This training helped effectively diagnose and treat OCD. Keisha is an expert clinician in treating OCD with many years of experience that made the training that much more powerful. She’s down to earth, relatable, and has tons of experience treating OCD with ERP. The course was well formatted and enabled me to begin using ERP immediately. The option to have was group consultation after was was incredibly helpful. I highly recommend this course.
