WHAT IS ADVANCED ERP TRAINING?

This ERP training is designed for clinicians who already understand the foundations of Exposure and Response Prevention and want to strengthen their ability to run ERP effectively in complex cases.

This course functions as advanced OCD CEU training, focusing on delivering ERP with consistency, flexibility, and clinical precision when comorbidities, trauma histories, sensory differences, or therapist hesitation complicate care.

The emphasis is clear: deliver ERP “no matter what,” while maintaining safety, response prevention, and ethical practice.

COURSE OVERVIEW

In real-world practice, OCD rarely presents in isolation. High symptom severity, trauma histories, family accommodation, neurodevelopmental differences, and cultural mismatches frequently complicate treatment.

This advanced ERP training equips clinicians to:

  • Reframe traditional “barriers” as modifiable treatment targets

  • Identify and address therapist avoidance

  • Integrate trauma-informed and sensory-responsive planning without diluting ERP

  • Support executive functioning challenges in Autism and ADHD

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care

  • Track measurable outcomes to guide next steps

Participants will learn to conceptualize complex OCD through a dual-diagnosis and systems lens while preserving the behavioral integrity of ERP.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Identify core barriers to effective ERP-including low motivation, high symptom intensity, limited insight, treatment-interfering behaviors (TIBs), family accommodation, therapist avoidance, and cultural mismatch.

  • Formulate individualized case conceptualizations that reframe these barriers through a dual-diagnosis lens (adult-diagnosed Autism/ASD, ADHD, PTSD, MDD, GAD, OCPD, BPD) and relevant cultural/sensory factors.

  • Select and deliver in-session, evidence-based tactics-trauma-informed ERP, sensory-informed planning, executive-function scaffolds, and ACT/DBT skills-that preserve response prevention.

  • Design exposure hierarchies that maximize inhibitory learning and values alignment for presentations with low insight, high arousal, or ego-syntonic obsessions.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care-pharmacotherapy, family work/accommodation reduction, and collaboration with other providers-to sustain ERP gains and reduce relapse risk.

  • Demonstrate the art and discipline of ERP by running exposures consistently and flexibly, “no matter what,” amid comorbidity and uncertainty, while tracking outcomes to guide next steps.

CORE CLINICAL FOCUS

This OCD CEU training addresses:

  • Low motivation and ambivalence

  • High symptom intensity and limited insight

  • Treatment-interfering behaviors (TIBs)

  • Family accommodation patterns

  • Cultural mismatch and contextual barriers

  • Therapist hesitation or avoidance

  • Ego-syntonic obsessions

  • High arousal and dissociative tendencies

MORE ON CORE CLINICAL FOCUS:

We will examine comorbid conditions including:

  • Adult-diagnosed Autism (ASD)

  • ADHD

  • PTSD

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

ADVANCED SKILLS YOU WILL DEVELOP:

Participants will:

  1. Identify core barriers to effective ERP implementation.

  2. Develop individualized case conceptualizations using a dual-diagnosis and cultural-context lens.

  3. Design exposure hierarchies that maximize inhibitory learning and values alignment.

  4. Apply trauma-informed ERP while preserving response prevention.

  5. Integrate sensory-informed pacing and executive-function scaffolds.

  6. Utilize ACT and DBT skills to manage affective instability and TIBs.

  7. Coordinate multidisciplinary care, including pharmacotherapy collaboration and family accommodation reduction.

  8. Track clinical outcomes to guide flexible, data-informed treatment adjustments.

INHIBITORY LEARNING & EXPOSURE DESIGN

We will translate the Inhibitory Learning Model into practical application by:

  • Building exposures that challenge fear expectancy

  • Reducing safety behaviors

  • Increasing distress tolerance without ritualization

  • Structuring values-driven motivation

  • Maintaining consistency even under uncertainty

Participants will practice designing culturally responsive and sensory-aware exposures that align with client values while maintaining ERP fidelity.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This ERP training is designed for:

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)

  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs)

  • Psychologists

  • Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs)

  • Clinicians with foundational ERP knowledge seeking advanced competency

Foundational ERP training is recommended prior to attending.

DIFFERENTIATING OCD AND ANXIETY DISORDERS

Statistics reveal that individuals with OCD often face a lengthy journey of 14-16 years before receiving effective treatment, highlighting the critical importance of an accurate diagnosis as the initial step toward changing these figures. In this presentation, we will compare OCD with GAD, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, Illness Anxiety Disorder, and Somatic Symptom Disorder. It’s essential to understand the DSM-5 criteria for OCD to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment. Let's begin by diving into this exploration of diagnosing. LEARN MORE

KD (she/her) is a practicing therapist over the past 20 years at KDH Counseling. She has worked extensively with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Specific Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Certified, and BTTI trained for treatment of OCD.   She enjoys using biology as a foundation to guide behavioral approaches to treating mental health issues.  She loves DBT, RODBT, and ERP because they address mental health treatment through tangible behavioral steps. Followed by trauma work that can be done through EMDR, and Deep Brain Reorienting to help treat trauma responses that may be contributing to the presenting problems.  We never stop learning and this insatiable quest for learning continues to drive her personally and professionally.

Leaning into Therapy: OCD Subtypes

Join Monet in an enlightening conversation with KD as they unravel the multifaceted world of OCD subtypes. From Harm OCD and Pedophilia OCD to Sexual Orientation OCD, Scrupulosity OCD, Checking OCD, Just Right OCD, and Contamination OCD, this episode dives deep into the often misunderstood manifestations of OCD.

Together, they shed light on how these subtypes present themselves in clinical settings, equipping therapists with the tools to recognize and differentiate OCD from anxiety disorders. By demystifying these experiences, this discussion empowers LPCs, LCSWs, and LMFTs to approach clients with greater understanding and compassion.
